Reshaping organisational culture through leadership: A case study for identifying and assessing future leadership talent in the Petroleum sector

Presentation

Following an acquisition process, Astron Energy needed to refresh the organisation in order to set the business up for renewed success and aid in its ultimate ambition of delivering on a brand promise of superior value in the petroleum industry.
In pursuit of this goal, it was acknowledged that culture, mindset, and values are central to driving value creation. A culture transformation journey was launched to reshape the business’s culture - honouring its past while adapting to be fit-for-purpose and equipping the business to meet future challenges.
To achieve the desired culture, it was essential to have effective, skilled, and high-performing leaders in place who could model and instil critical behaviours. As such, a leadership talent and succession planning solution was required to support the business in reaching this objective. This process began with defining the corporate culture and identifying the essential leadership skills and competencies required to drive it forward.

The aim of the presentation will be to share the process of identifying the essential leadership characteristics, behaviours, ways of working, crucial moments and mindset shifts for Astron Energy. In addition, the case study will outline the approach followed to transform these into future-ready leadership competencies that can be entrenched in the business by:
• Balancing relevance to the Astron Energy environment with validated behaviours
• Ensuring fairness, transparency, autonomy and accountability
• Defining competencies and measurement criteria at multiple levels of the organisation
• Measuring current leadership capability with a targeted 360-degree assessment
