Industrial psychologists and assessment centre practitioners rely on psychometric assessments to measure individual differences in abilities, personality traits, and other psychological constructs. These assessments are crucial tools in our work. Artificial intelligence (AI) has revolutionised the field of psychometric assessments, offering numerous advantages, such as reduced human error, increased efficiency, and the ability to analyse vast amounts of data quickly. AI-powered assessments, including natural language processing (NLP) models, have become increasingly popular in creating psychometric assessments. However, using AI in psychometric assessments also poses several challenges and ethical considerations. This talk will discuss the current state of AI in psychometric assessments, its benefits, challenges, and ethical concerns.

As experts in people measurement, it is essential to understand the benefits and limitations of AI-powered assessments. By understanding the various AI models available, including NLP models, and their advantages and limitations, we can make informed decisions about when and how to use them in assessments. Furthermore, they must also be aware of the ethical considerations associated with using AI in assessments, such as the potential for bias and privacy concerns. By being informed about the use of AI in assessments, practitioners can ensure that assessments are fair, reliable, and valid, and provide valuable insights into an individual's abilities and potential for success.

Fred Guest is a registered Industrial Psychologist and Managing Director of TTS-Top Talent Solutions (Pty) Ltd. He has been working as Industrial Psychologist since 1996 and gained experience in competency design, occupational assessment, building integrated talent management solutions, and the development of assessment strategies that add value to insightful talent analytics.

As a consultant, he assisted a range of national and international companies in the manufacturing, financial and service industries in designing competency frameworks for integrated talent management systems, recruitment and selection strategies, Internet-based assessment practices, and performance succession planning systems. Working with Executives and Senior Management teams, he implemented projects in Southern Africa, Egypt, Europe, Singapore, Australia and the United States of America.

Fred was President of the Society of Industrial and Organisational Psychology of South Africa (SIOPSA) from June 2006 to 2008, Past-President from June 2008 to June 2009. He was awarded honorary membership of the Society for his contribution to IO Psychology in South Africa in 2008.
